Am Totally Loving Architechture in Helsinki!

Not sure really what brought that on…

Anyway, their record company appear to have put on Heart it Races on You Tube which I’m just totally loving to death!

The video for Do the Whirlwind is also very cute:

How much diamond do you really need?

Not ever too much if you’re Eva Longoria. The gal has almost run out of finger for them!

Brown Rice is the spawn of satan

Because of my partial Asian heritage, sometimes people get shocked that I don’t know how to cook rice (”but it’s so simple!”). Thing is I grew up with that wonderful invention known as a rice cooker. I put in the cups of rice and fill the water to the line specified, press a button and it tells me when its ready and even keeps it warm for me. Stovetops don’t keep food warm for you, they burn down your house.

So now, living without one because of lack of benchtop space, I never cook rice. But this week, I finally overcame my aversion to cooking rice – blame it on an insatiable craving – and went and bought some brown rice. Now I should have known better, I should have started with something simpler like stock standard white long grain, but no, that craving was specifically for brown and cravings once started can never be stopped.

Big mistake! Apart from taking close to an hour to cook, it somehow managed to actually get harder into the cooking process before becoming edible. They are wrong when they say cockroaches will be the only thing to survive a nuclear war – I have no doubt brown rice will still be standing when the apocalyse comes.

From this traumatic experience, I’ve realised that even if I have to store it under my bed, I have to have a rice cooker. I like this fancy schmancy computerised one from Tiger that cooks any style of rice that you can possibly imagine, it even cooks “rice porridge” (popular Asian breakfast) and “rice with red beans”:

Mmmm… Yummy!

Fabulous self striping wool in Harry Potter colours and more

The Knitting Ninja does the most amazing hand dyed Australian yarns, including self striping Harry Potter house colours, here’s Gryffindor in Cashmerino (I’m up to Chapter Six!):

There’s also one based on Violet Beauregarde (Charlie’s Chocolate Factory):

I also love the Purple People Eater and Rosebud Lips. But my most wearable favourite is Moulin Rogue:

I wish that I knew about this place sooner… it’s been such a cold winter that I could have done with some lovely big colourful scarves. Will have to be super organised this summer and knit up a batch. Fortunately I’ve just joined a nearby stitch and bitch club to keep me motivated to finish my crafty projects (have baskets filled of unfinished stuff – it’s really quite shameful!).

Mr Lee, the CatCam Cat

This proud fellow is called Mr Lee and he is sporting a very nifty device. If you ever wanted to know what your cat gets up to, wonder no more! For just US$45 and quite a few weeks of waiting, you can have your own very cool catcam that attaches to your cat’s collar and takes random photos like this one:

But there is a safety note to consider:

Please consider that a collar on a neck of a cat is a potential safety risk. Because a cat wanders and crawls more or less in any place and can catch or trap itself with the collar on an object such as gate rods or tree branches. This may lead to dead of your pet. In the USA are collars common which provide a safety release if a certain amount of force is applied. Everything mounted to the collar will be lost in such a case. Please decide what is more important: The life of your pet or the device on the collar.

Cat + Toast = Anti-gravity machine

From a WIRED Science blog – I just couldn’t resist! Click on the graphic to go to the original file and to see the animation.

Cutest Hoodie Ears – Pattern

I’ve only been known to wear the hood up on jackets when it’s really really cold, and really really cold it is. In fact it is freezing in Sydney (was it the coldest June on record?). Cut Out + Keep’s adorable hood ears would make it a lot more tempting to bring up the hood even when the weather gets warmer. Maybe I can sew them on Andrew’s black hoodie when he’s not looking?!

See aren’t they just the best:

You’re my security now…

Was driving back from lunch and I saw a van from Artemis Security with “Your security is in our hands…” printed on the back of it. Not “Your security is safe in our hands” – which would be a lot less creepy given I haven’t asked them to go anywhere near my security.

(Blog) Moving in Party!

Wow finally got round to moving everything relevant from the last blog to this one. Still needs a bit of tidying up but it’s not doing too badly. For some reason the move was very painful, I had to uninstall and reinstall several times and well blah, it just got ugly so I stashed it away. This time round it was simple (fingers crossed anyway). I’ve trimmed away a lot of the intellectual property posts away (they are for another blog of mine that I’ve been slowly cultivating – will post a link when I’m happier with it) so the focus is a little tighter here hopefully – just stuff I love or find amusing or so crappy they’re fantastic.

Still need to assign categories and create a new blogroll but anyway, it’s just great having a blog again!
